Multidisciplinary Arts Workshops
Grades: K-12 25-35 students (or one classroom) per workshop 6- to 10-week visual and performing arts workshops with SPARC teaching artists in vocal music, dance, poetry, photography, printmaking or animation. Select a creative discipline and our SPARC teaching artists will visit your classroom for 1-hour per week to facilitate an engaging arts experience. Students will develop technical skills in a creative discipline and participate in meaningful discussions about their identities, cultures, histories and communities. |
The Emancipation Project Grades: 6-12 6- to 8- week workshop where students design and paint individual identity portraits that visualize their hopes and dreams for the future. SPARC educators use interdisciplinary arts methodologies to help students learn about their communities and identities. Students use iPads to digitally compose self-portraits that imagine who they can be in the future and how they can inspire positive change. Students then work with SPARC teaching artists to hand-paint their artworks. The Emancipation Project is grounded in the idea that when students imagine and create, they can achieve. |

The Namesake Mural Project
Grades: 6-12 8- to 10-week workshop that engages students in the production of an original mural that honors the legacy of the hero or heroine their school is named after. SPARC muralists and teaching artists will work closely with a small group of students on a weekly basis to teach them about muralism and the visual representation of historic icons. Students will have the opportunity to paint the mural on-site with SPARC muralists. Students will also participate in activities and discussions that teach them about muralism, local murals in their community, and the history and legacy of the icon they are painting. |
